A NEW DIRECTION & THE BEAR, by Anton Chekhov
A Note From Judith Estrine
When I’m not obsessing about finding a spot on an eternally unavailable vaccination line or wondering whether I really need to double mask (yes, I do!) I find myself thinking a lot about Prism ’s survival – not just fiscal survival, (although that’s definitely among my top ten 4 AM obsessions). I ruminate about challenges contemporary not-for-profit theaters face as we struggle to appeal to ever changing social and political realities while keeping true to our individual missions.
As you know, a play comes alive through the efforts of a community of actors, playwrights, directors and designers. All of you who have been part of Prism’s community know that our mission has always been to celebrate older actors and playwrights, while encouraging younger talent. For the past year we’ve focused on presenting these talented young artists. Nonetheless, we have never forgotten that we all stand on the shoulders of the great theater artists who came before, and are all honored to be in their company.
Moving forward, Prism’s primary focus will be to present both great playwrights of the past performed by talented older contemporary professionals, as well as new plays by older playwrights. In short, we have chosen to remain true to Prism Stage Company’s original mission.
